In 1992, shoegaze fans were treated to the masterpiece that was Delaware, followed by the experimental National Coma in 1993. Unfortunately, after sharing stages with Radiohead, Hole, Blur, and PJ Harvey, Drop Nineteens disbanded. But for guitarist Greg Ackell, it was a fulfilling journey, going from teenage musicians in Boston to mid-twenties with an MTV video to their name. With the end of Drop Nineteens, Ackell was satisfied that his musical career had come full circle.

The initial step in creating Hard Light involved reuniting the band. Drop Nineteens is a highly collaborative venture, with Ackell as the primary lyricist and Zimmerman, Paula Kelley, Motohiro Yasue, and Peter Koeplin working together to bring the sonic landscape to life. Over the span of a year, the record was pieced together by recording at various studios throughout the country. The process of making music as a group felt effortless, organic, and exhilarating.
